Town Restaurant is not only one of the
best restaurants in the Big Apple, but also an amazing cocktail
bar, thanks to the work of its "bar chef" Albert Trummer.
Finding Town is quite difficult, maybe because
of its curiously generic name. Unless you're a customer at
the new Chambers Hotel, in the rear of which the restaurant's
hidden, you might never find it exists.
TriBeCa and the Chambers Hotel
TriBeCa, like SoHo, is another neighborhood
with an acronym, (the Triangle Below Canal Street) and in
the last couple of years it has become one of the hippest
places in New York. The area is full of trendy boutiques,
art galleries and fashionable restaurants, while on the other
hand Canal Street, which marks TriBeCa's northern boundary,
is a bustling casbah of bargain retail outlets. Nightlife
in this neighborhood is kicking: you only have to enter one
of the many bars, after sunset, to understand why TriBeCa
is probably the city's hottest hood.
The Chambers Hotel, opened its door last year in TriBeCa.
Its interiors reminds of an art gallery and the whole hotel
is a sort of "living museum" designed by architect David
Rockwell to recreate the experience of staying in a collector's
private townhouse. Every room and suite is decorated with
the works (photographs, paintings, installations) of a hundred
emerging artists.
The Town restaurant and cocktail bar
The bar's interior, in gray-scale color scheme, have
a more sober design then the hotel rooms: the chairs are comfortable
and the atmosphere is quiet, perfect for a relaxing evening.
Albert Trummer, beverage director at Town, is one of
the most famous bar chefs in New York: his imaginatively prepared
cocktails are certailnly worth a visit at the Town, and some
of them are now famous, like the Truffle Martini, or
the Town Absinthe: this particular drink is a flaming
cocktail, and watching Mr Trummer preparing it is like
watching a stage event. Moreover Trummer often uses
strange or unusual ingredients to prepare its concoctions,
and that's why drinking at the Town is a really unique experience.
The food too, is colorful and original and chef Geoffrey
Zakarian's style is unique. Every dish on the menu is
intricately thought out. Moreover the food, served by friendly
and efficient staff, is paired with excellent wines, that
enhance the flavours of Mr. Zakarian's dishes: from
escargots and truffles risotto, to carpaccio with bracing
blood oranges and mint, or the light and delicate desserts,
the chef's imagination seem to have no limit.
Finally, if you're in New York and looking for a way to make
your evening a total celebration, then you should better not
miss the chance to book a room at the Chambers Hotel
and spending the evening at Town for dinner and cocktails.
