Subject:40% to 35%
Why has the alchohol quanaty in Southern Comfort been redused from 40% to 34% in the UK?
Is this the same the world over?

Check out the www.southerncomfort.com website, you will see in the corner a '21- 50% abv' sign. Rather a large margin?

Subject:A quality bartender
Tell me which are the most important qualities of the bartender?

A bartender must be always well-mannered, clean, and smart. A bartender should remember a list of drinks that are asked for at their establishment. If new drinks are asked for his knowledge base gets bigger. I still think that this knowledge base is important for a bartender. Faster and more reliable service is given as a result of it.
And yes, if you forget how to make a certain drink it is helpful if the customer knows the ingredients. If not it is the bartenders’ responsibility to offer a different drink that the customer may enjoy. Attitude is the first impression a bartender gives when you talk to him or her.

From: Francesco
Subject:Alcohol
Dear bartender,
I wonder: how does alcohol consumption work? How is the alcohol volume related to the quantity and kind of alcohol one drinks?
Foe example, is it the same thing to have 10 cl of a 44% gin and
40 cl of a 11% wine, or is completely different?
Thanks,

Francesco

Dear Francesco,
the proof or percentage of alcohol is a representation of how much pure
alcohol is in a drink.
So to answer your question it would be the same.
44% gin is 44/100 alcohol, so 10 cl gin = 4.4 cl alcohol
11% wine is 11/100 alcohol, so 40 cl wine = 4.4 cl alcohol
the alcohol consumption works.....take a look on our article n°6..
Thanks

Ps. come and see us.....I work in Florence .....Gilli.
Regardless the type of alchol the body processes approximately 1/2 oz. of pure
alcohol or 1 ounce of a 50% 100 proof alcohol.

Hope that answers your question.

Subject:Garnish
How do I cut, curl or peel the perfect citrus twist to garnish our drinks?
Thanks,
A

First of all let's say that making the perfect twist is not really difficult, but requires some practice. To make a twist follow these steps:
- Cut both ends of the fruit, so that you can see the fruit's pulp.
- Insert the blade of your knife between the skin and the fruit, then rotate the citrus to cut off the pulp.
- Repeat it on the other side and pop up the core.
- Clean the skin from the fruit's remains. Remember that a thick twist is very bitter, so remove even some parts of the white skin, to make your twist thinner.
- Cut the skin in a spiral (about 1/4 inch wide), making two turns around it, obtaining a long, curly twist.

Subject:Grenadine
Is grenadine only used in cocktails to colour them and add flavour? Does grenadine contain alcohol?

Green Grenadine is a non-alcoholic green syrup. Red Grenadine is a non-alcoholic red syrup often used for colouring in cocktails. Also add a bit of sugar in harsh drinks. Grenadine (grenadine syrup) is a blood-red, strong syrup made from pomegranates. It is the number one among fruit syrups, and is used in many cocktails not only for sweetening, but also to give them a red colour.

I have recently broke up with my boyfriend! I started drinking heavily. This lifestyle is causing me to have tremendous headaches! I've been going to sleep at night taking aspirin and plenty of water but It’s not enough Please give me a solution.

The hangovers are caused by dehydration. Rehydrate your body and you will feel better. The water used to wash down the Asprin will do more for you than the Asprin! One thing you can try is a glass of warm salt water before you go out drinking. The salt will help your body retain water.

How do you flambé a drink if it's in a glass? And (to be on the save side) drinking it while it's on fire is possible, isn't it?
Tks!

Be very very careful while lighting a drink. You should not drink a shot after you blow it out. Make sure you stick your hand over it to make sure its out. Sometimes with high proof liqueurs (Bacardi 151 for example) the flame burns. Lawsuits against bartenders have been brought up because of that. BE VERY VERY CAREFUL!

From: edie
Subject:percentage of alchol in wine
we were having a discussion. Is there a maximum percentage allowed on wine, even lesser wines like boones farm? Was the amount ever 32%? Please help end this discussion?

The alcohol in wine is created naturally as the results of live yeasts digesting available sugars. As long as the yeasts are alive, they will produce alcohol. When the yeasts have digested all of the available sugars, they will starve, and thus stop producing alcohol. If the liquid has sufficient sugars, there is also a point at which the alcohol in the liquid gets too high, and the yeasts will die. The specific percentage will vary depending on the yeasts being used. I believe that most of the standard wine yeasts can survive in liquids that can contain from 15 to 17% alcohol.

Thus "by definition" the maximum alcohol of a wine would be 17%. In order for a wine to have a higher level of alcohol, it would be necessary to add a distilled spirit (such as brandy) to it, which would then classify it as a "fortified wine".

A recent article came out talking about the Ruby as a grapefruit martini... I tested out a number of recipes at my bar last night, and came up with a good one. It's two shots of vodka, an ounce of grapefuit, and either triple sec plus a splash of cranberry, or just a dash grenadine. Both lend equal sweetness and color, and the women loved it.

So, what can I say.....so now we have to talk about the "donna's favourite ruby martini"...
