How to prepare a 10.000$ cocktail?

What does it take to prepare an award winning cocktail? Which are the most important elements that should be considered during its preparation?

After waiting for one year, finally the coolest bartending competition of the year is about to begin. During the whole year we've tried to keep you updated about the world of bartending, with news and interesting features, trying to provide articles that could improve your knowledge about products and techniques. Our purpose was to give you updated information to allow you to create your own recipe. The market currently offers a wide range of products and is constantly evolving and in our opinion updated information is a key factor: a bartender is a professional, someone who owes part of his success to the quality of the products that he carefully chooses and who manages to mix them creating a perfect combination of flavours, sensations and even emotions. But what's the difference between a simple mix and a great cocktail? And, above all, what's the difference between an ordinary concoction and an award winning cocktail?

When evaluating a cocktail, we must consider three factors: taste, fragrance and appearance. The perfect cocktail is the one that has a sublime flavour, an inviting fragrance and is eye-appealing.

Flavour

We all know that when we talk about flavour, it's definetly a matter of taste: not all of us like the same kind of flavours, and while some people likes dry, strong flavoured drinks, many other prefere delicate aromas and sweet ingredients. Moreover some of the ingredients used in many cocktails have very strong flavours that are not particularly pleasant for most people if tasted separately, while the same ingredients can be widely appreciated when combined with other elements. A bartender, like a chef, must above all know how to exploit and at the same time increase the value of every single ingredients, following some simple rules that allow to create concoctions that are almost universally appreciated.
First of all we must always consider that there are five main kinds of flavours and therefore five main categories of ingredients:

- sweet: many liqueurs with low alcohol content taste sweet, like most fruit juices or pulp, syrups, honey and of course sugar;

- sour: all citrus fruits can add a sour note to your concoctions, from lemon to orange or lime;

- bitter: many herbs extracts and liqueurs are often used to add a bitter flavour to a cocktail, as well as liqueurs like Campari;

- spicy: tabasco and ginger are the main elements of these category, but many other spices can be used.

The perfect cocktail is the one that mixes successfully at least two of these kinds of flavours. Think for example to a drink that awakens your taste with a sour flavour and then please you with a sweet and delicate aftertaste.

Fragrance

Fragrance is a very important element, as important as taste: when we take our glass, the fragrance is the first thing that strikes our senses, before even taking the first sip. Ingredients should therefore be chosen considering their distinctive aromas: think of difference between the weak aroma of a Martini made with vodka if compared to the one of a Martini made with gin, bearing all the fragrance of juniper. As for flavours, fragrance can be sweet or sour, bitter of spicy, and should be chosen carefully in order to give your cocktail a balanced bouquet.
