Low carb diets
Diet comes, diet goes. Nutrition is surely a very fashionable matter, however we have recently seen the confirmation of a precise range of them that goes under the comprehensive term of "low carbohydrate diets". The idea is quite simple: carbohydrates (carbs) are a complex sugar found in almost any kind of food. Excess carbohydrates cause elevated insulin levels, which in turn, promotes storage of body fat. They make people fat exactly like proteins do, but lo-carbs' advocates say that carbs do more. So people have to eliminate carbs from their diet to stop accumulating fat. That's it. Any food is allowed, in the amount one wants, even oozing fried oil: the only condition is they must not contain carbs over a certain amount.
In a sense, these diets give people a kind of liberty with no real limits to how much one can eat, because they claim that gaining weight is not something concerning calories. Low carb diets base this claim on ketosis, a state in which fat is primarily used to fuel the body: once one reaches this condition, his body starts to burn stored fats, and the game is done. To reach this state, carb suppression is needed (so fat storing stops) and exercising is very helpful (speeding the path to ketosis).
Before you run to the kitchen and devour a whole turkey, you'd better read further.
According to the American Heart Association's nutrition committee and many other medical institutions, in fact, these diets can be risky to long-term health: they claim that people on these diets eat more saturated fat and cholesterol but get very few of the essential vitamins, minerals, fibres, and other nutritional elements in carbohydrates. They could carry great risks of heart disease as well as problems for the kidneys, bones, liver, and loads of other problems.
Moreover, some of them seem to cause mostly water weight loss, that does not exactly mean "losing fat", while others cause weight loss via calorie restriction, but rigidity of the diet and limited food choices made them impractical for the long term.
Counters have doubts also about inducing ketosis to curb appetite: by them it is the body's natural response to starvation, it is a mechanism to protect our body during starvation, but it does not last forever: after continuous ketosis people begin feeling fatigued, run out of energy, complain of headaches, aren't able to exercise.
If you want to try one of those, you can start with the first essential steps: drink plenty of water to contrast occurring constipation; forget pastries, sugar and, if possible, caffeine; 30 grams is your daily maximum quantity of carbs - use a counter to know what you are eating; exercise; avoid saturated fats. Then, start eating everything you want, as much as you want! (If diarrhoea occurs, don't worry: it is normal and it will quickly go away).
Most popular Low Carbs diets
Dr Atkins diet
It is the most popular low carb diet. Dr Atkins wrote it some 30 years ago and had floating fortune till now.
It is the diet of dreams, because it allows to eat all the things we always thought they were the worst in losing weight: not only fried meat helps losing weight, but booze too!
In a press release, researchers at the Durham VA Medical Center in North Carolina say that their study did not find any of the safety concerns voiced by the American Heart Association: moreover, the diet had positive changes in heart risk factors such as reduced cholesterol and increased HDL or "good cholesterol."
Among the many recipes suggested, you find Feta and Olive Meatballs, a protein bomb made of parsley, onion, beef, feta cheese, green olives and eggs, that gives 1616 total calories, 128 grams of fat, 94 grams of proteins but only 22 of carbs and 8 of fibres; or even Flat Roasted Chicken with Prosciutto and Green Olives containing only 20 total carbohydrates.
Dr Stillman diet
Also known as "The Doctor's Quick Weight Loss Diet" by Dr Irwin Maxwell Stillman, it is a severe ketogenic diet. The Doctor is sure that because protein requires more energy to digest, you could metabolize large portions of it and still lose fat. It is not easily sustainable for the long term. It may be useful in breaking plateaus and in those too impatient to allow their bodies to take the fat off gradually at its own pace.
You can eat all you fish from a strict list, in the quantity you need to satisfy your hunger, even six times a day. The only limit is the list: simply forget what is not on it.
The list: Lean meats, chicken and turkey, eggs, cottage cheese, farmer cheese, pot cheese, at least 8 glasses of water per day, coffee and tea without sugar, milk or cream; common seasonings: allowed; sauces and dressings: not allowed; mayonnaise: not allowed; vitamin and mineral tablets recommended.
The Zone diet
This diet sets your body up to burn fat as a primary source of fuel while you retain your "lean body mass" (LBM). By regulating the amount of insulin your body produces. Insulin is released by the pancreas after you eat carbohydrates, and while it assures that your cells receive the necessary blood sugar, it also inhibits fat burning, converts almost half of your dietary carbohydrate directly into fat and causes hunger. The Zone diet moderates the insulin response by limiting the intake of refined sugars and keeping all other carbohydrates to about 40% of the diet. The concept of the Zone is simple: every time you eat it must be in the correct ratio of Protein to Carbohydrate to Fats. That ratio? 40/30/30 - 40% Carbohydrate, 30% Protein, 30% Fat. The maximum control of insulin occurs when this ratio is met.
Following this diet needs considering the amount of the three components in terms of "blocks": you need to eat a certain number of blocks per day, and you may know how many of them a certain food contains referring to a specific table.
Sugar Busters diet
The same basis of the Zone Diet: insulin is Evil, away from us insulin! Far from us potatoes and pasta, white bread and white rice, carrots and corn! The Mediterranean diet is considered the best way to become obese in few days and shortly die for a heart attack.
Counters
Low carbs diets popularity hasn't passed unnoticed, and so did the critics raised on them. So other diets grew in explicit opposition to them, gaining fortune after people's perplexity. One for all: Don Lemmon's Anti-Atkins Diet, claims that it has not to do with those diets while "it's all about food" (!). You simply have to buy his infallible method together with the "perfect vitamins" and the Lemmon's oil, and the fat is over!
